After a week of ups and downs, Hoyas fans have reason to get excited. For the first time in this young season, Dante Harris was named the Big East’s Freshman of the Week. On top of that, Jamorko Pickett was named to the Big East’s Honor Roll. After this week’s stellar play, I am actually excited for what the future holds for this team.
Over the past three games, Dante Harris has been a breath of fresh air for Hoyas fans. During that stretch, Harris has scored 12.0 points per game while shooting 50% from the field and 40% from behind the arc. Although he came off the bench against Coppin State and Villanova, the younger Harris was finally given the opportunity to start against St. John’s with Jalen Harris out with an injury. Stepping into a starting role, Dante did everything that was expected of him and then some. He played almost the entire game (43 minutes to be exact) and came out with an impressive 22 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. As Ewing said, “I don’t think he played like a freshman.”
As for Pickett, over the past week he did exactly what we should expect out of him. Over three games, he averaged a double-double with 14.0 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game. His week was highlighted by an impressive 19 point and 18 rebound game against Coppin State. Sure, Coppin is not quite the same as the competition found in the Big East, but Pickett’s performance was impressive nonetheless. To make matters even better, he shot an impressive 62.1% from the floor and 55.6% from three-point range on the week. This is the Jamorko Pickett we have all been waiting for.
With the team getting a week off for finals, the Hoyas return to play next Sunday in a rematch against the St. John’s Red Storm in New York. As per usual with this matchup, who knows what kind of game we are going to witness, but one thing is for sure: we can all look forward to some continued good play out of our boys in blue and gray.
