Stop Teasing Me, Cole Anthony

So Hoyas fans, if you’ve been living under a rock, I’m here to tell you about Cole Anthony.

He’s the son of Greg Anthony, a 11 year veteran of the NBA and the star of Jerry Tarkanian’s early 1990’s Runnin’ Rebels UNLV teams. (For our fellow college students, yes, UNLV used to be good! Even though they just fired their coach after three years. Anyway.)

Cole is a point guard, and he’s pretty darn good.  As a five-star recruit, he’s a consensus top-five player in the class of 2019, and he was named MVP of the McDonald’s All-American game. In addition, he’s tabbed as a lottery pick, and would almost certainly be a one and done. He’d be a significant get for Patrick Ewing, and would be the first five star that Ewing has recruited.

This is him smacking down other all-star high school players for 25 points.

Yeah, he’s pretty good.

And he is such a darn tease.

The Hoyas have been recruiting Cole for some time, and after being announced in his final six schools in late October, they hosted Cole for an official visit in late November. This visit yielded these beautiful photos.

He’s wearing #50, the same as his father Greg wore. Later on, Greg posted this on Instagram.

Oh yeah, Greg Anthony and Patrick Ewing were teammates. They were teammates for four seasons, and are still good friends. I don’t know about you, but if it was between sending my son of to college with a guy I used to be a teammate with, or an old guy who says “dadgum” like he needs it to breathe, I think I’d go with the guy I’ve known for years. But at the end of the day, it’s Cole’s decision. He’s narrowed it down to his final four schools since then.

Lo and behold, the Hoyas are still in it. While Cole hasn’t spoken out too much publicly about his recruitment, Greg Anthony certainly has not been shy in speaking out.

A couple of days ago, his father tweeted this in response to some clown UNC fan who says Cole was basically a lock for Oregon or North Carolina.

Then earlier yesterday, his father Greg responds with this to someone who said Greg was wearing Carolina blue.

Damn you Greg Anthony, you are such a tease! I’m ready to get my hopes up and be let down when Cole doesn’t make it to the Hilltop.

After all, UNC is rated at a 92% chance to land him by the recruiting service 24/7 (and Oregon has the other 8%). But hey, maybe they know just as much as we do about how Cole and his family are leaning- which is to say, nothing at all!

Cole will be making his announcement this Tuesday at 8:50am ET, after pushing it back from Monday.

Even if we don’t get him, the Hoyas are still very, very, very well set up with James Akinjo and Mac McClung at PG. We’re essentially playing with house money. That being said, it certainly would be nice if Cole decided to make a stop in DC for a year.
