Death, taxes, and Georgetown struggling on defense. Your favorite sharps capitalized on Vegas’ overestimation in the Hoya’s abilities to net +2.18 units from Tuesday’s game against Navy. This Sunday, Georgetown will be faced with a far more daunting task, taking on an 11th ranked West Virginia team that nearly took down Gonzaga a few days ago. Brace yourselves. West Virginia looked very tough against Gonzaga. Don’t overthink this play; 10.5 points is simply too much for Georgetown to cover. The Hoyas defense looked dismal against a small Navy team with one star player and is poised for a rough showing against one of the top five KenPom players in the country, Derek Culver. But wait, things get worse. We all know that our Hoyas have been extremely inefficient playing against the press, and if Huggy Bear is so merciless as to institute his signature “Press Virginia,” we are sure to be in for a loooooong afternoon. Not to mention the Mountaineers have held their opponents to 24.7% beyond the arc and have a confident 40.9% offensive rebounding percentage (7th in the country) on the season. It sucks to bet against the good guys here, but do it for your own mental sanity.

Boy, was that ugly. I hate to fade my Hoyas but sheesh, Navy +10 was free money. We now turn to the task at hand, a West Virginia team who just went toe-to-toe with the best team in the country in Gonzaga just five days ago. Qudus and Timothy will certainly be tested today, as both Derek Culver and Oscar Tshiebwe will give them fits in the paint all game. West Virginia enters McDonough Arena with a top 15 offense and defense per Kenpom, tainting this game with the smell of a blowout. That’s why this line is mind-boggling to me. What has Vegas seen in this Georgetown team that I haven’t? The fact alone that the bookies have us +10.5 intrigues me; do they know something that I don’t? As much as I want to back my Hoyas, after last game’s lack of heart down the stretch I definitely cannot back them against the 11th ranked team in the country. Nonetheless, I’ll preserve my false hope in this team by avoiding the spread all together. My focus is on the total. You know what they say, “Life is too short to bet the under.” I’ll stick to that motto here. Both teams have scored 70+ in every outing so far. Yes, I expect Georgetown to again struggle offensively especially against a good defensive team, but if we see a blowout I’m confident that West Virginia can run the score up while playing phantom defense and allowing easy Georgetown buckets. Who doesn’t love rooting for points?

Wow, just wow. I genuinely think somebody had a few too many drinks before making these lines. After seeing this, I’m thinking one thing and one thing only: bring me my money. Maybe the bookmakers know something we don’t, or maybe I’m your typical pessimistic Hoyas fan, but I’m currently envisioning all the ways that Georgetown’s atrocious defense can get exposed in today’s matchup against a West Virginia team that nearly upset top ranked Gonzaga four days ago. Is a 146 point total a little high for a college basketball game? Maybe, but let me remind you that the Hoyas are facing off against arguably their best competition all year and are coming off a game where they coughed up 78 to Navy. In fact, I’m fully expecting Georgetown’s offense to struggle and West Virginia’s to have a field day in this game. Call this take flaming hot, but the Mountaineers may score 90+ points. At the same time, you can claim the fact that this game is being played at McDonough Arena might help keep it close, but in all honesty is my dog’s cardboard cutout going to keep Derek Culver from dropping 25 in Qudus Wahab’s face? Hell no. It truly kills me to say this, but we’ve got a blowout in the making. My words of advice are simple: pound the over, pound West Virginia. Sell the house, cash your kid’s college fund, sell your left kidney if you really want to and put it all on these lines, but get ready to take the winnings to the bank because the crystal ball I picked up at the thrift store around the corner is telling me West Virginia by a million. Ladies and gentlemen, POUND IT.

After a disastrous showing against Navy, both the Hoyas and I are looking to avoid a two game skid. I might need contacts, but if my eyes don’t deceive me, WVU -10.5 is an early Christmas gift. For me, it’s hard to have much faith in Georgetown after not only the loss to the Midshipmen but especially the Mountaineers’ impressive showing against #1 Gonzaga. Unfortunately, I just don’t see any holes in West Virginia’s game for the Hoyas to expose. With the Hoyas’ lackluster defense, subpar shooting, and lackadaisical awareness, I fully expect Bob Huggins’ squad to come out on top. The Hoyas will have to rely on their guards to make the offense work, with Oscar Tshiebwe posing an extremely difficult task for Qudus Wahab down low. Rebounding may be a serious issue, in which case I just don’t see anywhere the Hoyas have an advantage. I think West Virginia stymies the Hoyas enough to prevent the over from hitting. Hopefully I don’t come out of this looking like a clown once again, but hey, hindsight’s 20/20. West Virginia 80-64. Book it.
