UConn Puts a Damper on Senior Day Celebrations, Beats Georgetown 86-77

There was no Senior Day miracle. Despite the team’s valiant attempt at a second half comeback, the Hoyas lost on Senior Day to #21 UConn, resulting in the team’s 18th straight loss. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.

It was the same old issues on defense for Georgetown. They gave UConn a variety of open looks from behind the arc and were unable to limit interior scoring which allowed the Huskies to go on extended scoring runs. UConn Guard RJ Cole was able to easily penetrate the defense of Dante Harris over the course of the afternoon, enroute to an 18 point game where he made 4 of 6 three-point attempts. Kaiden Rice’s shooting was off all night even as he tried to give the Hoyas an offensive spark to get out of the early hole they were in. He ended up going 0 for 4 from the field, while only playing nine minutes. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.
Yet again, Georgetown’s rotations were headscratchers. Ryan Mutombo’s playing time this season has had some wild variance, but against UConn he logged some solid playing time, as did Kobe Clark. He had some nice chemistry with Clark early on, with Clark feeding Mutombo in the paint. 7 of Mutombo’s 9 points came in the first half. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.
On the other hand, Jalin Billinglsey played very little. After a game against DePaul which Ewing hailed as his best game of the year, Billingsley logged just two minutes Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.

At the half, Georgetown was suffering from the same woes as usual. A lack of offense— Mohammed only had 3, and Harris scored 0—and porous defense allowed UConn to build a 15 point lead going into the break. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.
Throughout the game, UConn absolutely torched the Hoyas from three. The Huskies ended the game shooting 55% from three on 20 attempts. It was more of the same throughout the second half, as the Huskies got out to their largest lead of the game at 20 points. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.
After going scoreless in the first half against UConn, Dante Harris erupted for 23 points in the second half, thanks in no small part to finding his shot from behind the arc. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.

Capital One was rocking at points throughout the game, but it was more for UConn than Georgetown. By the game’s end, the arena was a morgue: no cheers, and no boos. Just apathy. Photograph by Adrian Ali-Caccamo.
