The Agony and the Ecstasy: Georgetown Falls to #15 Marquette

I was going to write up a whole recap of this game, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I will instead make a list of all the good and bad things that happened in this game.

I was going to write up a whole recap of this game, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I will instead make a list of all the good and bad things that happened in this game.

GOOD: The Hoyas were only 2.5 point underdogs! Vegas thought this game would be close! Add into the fact that Georgetown had overperformed the betting odds in 13 of their 16 games to that point, and you have a recipe for delusion from me.

BAD: I had to use the word delusion above.

GOOD: The student section was packed for the game, overflowing into other sections. Whenever the Marquette fans tried to chant, the student section would start up a louder chant of their own.

BAD:  Marquette’s coach, Steve Wojciechowski (or Wojo), a former floor-slapping Dukie, had very questionable fashion choices. He wore what appeared to be leather sneakers with his suit. His attempt at blending business and casual didn’t work well.

GOOD: Markus Howard of Marquette had to leave the game just three minutes into the game with back problems. Given that he was Marquette’s undisputed best player (and coming off being named the Player of the Week within the conference) and Marquette’s lack of depth, this made victory over this ranked opponent much more likely!

BAD: For basketball fans, the loss of a extremely talented player is never fun to watch. Plus, this meant that inevitably someone else was going to light us up.

GOOD: With just over 15 minutes left in the second half we held a 8 point lead over Marquette.

BAD: For the next 5 minutes Marquette went on a 14-0 run.

GOOD: Georgetown came back and kept things close, usually within 2 points or so for the rest of the game.

BAD: Well, you’ll see.

GOOD: We were down by two in the last minute, and Marquette sent Mac McClung to the foul line.

BAD: Mac only made one of the shots.

GOOD: Marquette did not score and then we were down by one point in the final seconds with the ball. With Akinjo handling it, he drove and drew three defenders.

BAD: Naturally, he would send it out to one of the open teammates, right? Nope. Akinjo tried to shoot and got blocked, sending the ball out of bounds.

GOOD: We got the ball. Again, we were down by a point in the final seconds of the game with Akinjo handling it.  We had another opportunity to score!

BAD: Akinjo AGAIN tried to drive and shoot, even though Jessie Govan was open on the perimeter. Akinjo AGAIN got blocked. We ended up fouling up Marquette to get the ball back, and of course they made both of their free throws.

GOOD: We got the ball to Mac for a last second three-point attempt after fouling up Marquette. Maybe we could have sent the game to overtime! (Extremely DJ Khaled Voice Another one.)

BAD: He missed the shot.

GOOD: We played Marquette close, and they’re the #15 team in the country. Plus, Mac McClung led the team with 24 points, hopefully finally putting to rest the question of whether he could handle himself against “real” competition.

BAD: This loss hurts, especially since we had a lead and they were missing their best player. Of course, even though Markus Howard wasn’t around to light us up, Sam and Joey Hauser did, and even Theo effin’ John joined in.

See you all Monday when the Hoyas take on Creighton!
