On April 9th, Georgetown and Ed Cooley added former 4-star recruit Dontrez Styles into the fold for the 2023-2024 season. A North Carolina native, Styles left UNC over concerns about playing time and chose Georgetown over NC State.
Now a junior, Styles is coming off two seasons at North Carolina in which he was largely buried in the rotation, but the forward should make a larger impact for the Hoyas. In his time at UNC, Styles averaged 1.8 points and 0.9 rebounds in just under 6 minutes per game. He showed flashes of strong putback ability but shot under 37% from the field in his time as a Tarheel.
One thing Styles has been known for since his high school days is his versatility, which is a substantial addition to a weakened Georgetown frontcourt. Standing at 6’6”, Styles is largely known as a combo forward, but his Georgetown profile lists him as a Guard/Forward. With that said, his aggressive on-count instincts pair well with his size, and he should become a demon chasing rebounds for the paper thin frontcourt. Additionally, Styles was a strong defender at the power forward position in those limited minutes at UNC, which bodes well as he transitions to Big East action.
Ultimately, Styles looks to bring his scrappy style of play and rebounding instincts to the Georgetown bench as he looks to earn a more concrete opportunity with this revamped Hoyas roster. While the likelihood of Styles being in the initial starting lineup is low, he certainly can play his way up as the season goes on. Either way, Dontrez Styles came to Georgetown in search of a bigger role, so expect to see a lot of him as the season progresses.
Let’s hope Styles has good Hoya Style! Go Hoyas!
Let’s hope Dontrez Styles can bring some magic to the Hoyas!
