Mac McClung is no longer a Hoya.
In an interview with ESPN, Mac McClung announced that he was simultaneously entering his name in the transfer portal while withdrawing from the NBA draft.
In the interview, McClung detailed what motivated him to transfer:
“It was a number of different events that made me feel I had no choice but to transfer from Georgetown,” McClung told ESPN. “I really wanted to stay, but things throughout my career made me realize that I couldn’t.
I’m looking for a place I can call home. A place I can be a part of a family and help them succeed.”
A career that started with so much promise, including being named to the Big East All-Freshman team, was derailed by injuries and ultimately culminated in his decision to transfer.
What does this all mean? To start, Georgetown is left with a serious hole in their roster heading into the 2020-2021 season. McClung was the Hoyas’ leading scorer last season, pouring in 15.7 points per game. With their top scoring threat now gone, there will no doubt be some growing pains offensively for this young Hoyas team. The group of incoming freshmen guards will need to grow up fast if they are to fill the shoes left vacant by McClung’s departure.
In the big picture, McClung leaving is another blow to a Georgetown program that has undergone rocky times under Ewing’s leadership. When the class of 2018 recruits arrived on the Hilltop two years ago, they were heralded as the group that would bring Georgetown back to national prominence. Fast forward to today and all four members of that class have transferred, leaving Hoya fans everywhere to wonder where it all went wrong.
