The accolades just keep on rolling in for this stellar Georgetown freshman class. Mac McClung was named Big East Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. McClung played back-to-back very solid games against Providence and Butler for the Hoyas, averaging 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. McClung also scored a game-high 21 points on 7-19 (36.8%) shooting from the field in Georgetown’s 73-69 heartbreaking loss to Butler.

As you can see from the tweet above, McClung is now the top scoring freshman in the Big East. A big reason for this is his growing ability to create chances for himself even when his three-point shot is not falling. After his big game against St. John’s, McClung heavily relied upon the three-ball to anchor his offense. However, Mac has displayed his ability to attack his defender off screens. In the clip below, notice how instead of attempting a running lay-up (which would’ve been blocked), Mac calmly jump stops and tosses up a pretty, one-handed touch shot. McClung attempted this type of shot against Butler numerous times.

With the Hoyas’ NCAA Tournament hopes seemingly on life support, Georgetown needs Mac to consistently provide a scoring spark on the perimeter from game-to-game. If McClung can keep up this type of play, look for Georgetown to continue to have a fighting chance to pull out a win against any opponent in the Big East.
