After a miserable loss to Creighton, the Hoyas bounced back to defeat Butler at home, 78-63. This much-needed win was somewhat unremarkable, as the Hoyas were in control most of the game. Perhaps the most notable part of the game was that both Jahvon Blair and Jamorko Pickett surpassed 1,000 career points.
“I try to help out and give back when I can… It’s definitely a blessing,” Pickett said about reaching 1,000 points.
After a 4-0 run by Butler opened the game and angered Ewing, the Hoyas regrouped after a timeout and turned things around. They then dominated for practically the rest of the first half. A balanced scoring attack was led by Jahvon Blair with 9 points headed into the halftime break. The Hoyas shot 53.8% from the field and 57.1% from three-point land in the first half, a large reason they jumped out to a big lead. Butler also struggled to rebound against Georgetown, as they were outrebounded 40-21 on the night. The first half ended with Georgetown leading 38-22.
The dominance continued in the second half despite Georgetown’s turnover woes. Butler was never really able to close the gap, pulling no closer than 13 in the second half. The Bulldogs were led by Bryce Golden, Bo Hodges, and Chuck Harris, who all had 12 points. The one area of the game Butler did win was the turnover battle, as they only had 13 turnovers compared to 21 from the Hoyas.
Georgetown’s solid play led them to victory, but Butler’s poor play certainly contributed to this outcome. The scoring was balanced for Georgetown, and they also dominated on the glass. Butler couldn’t get anything going despite Georgetown’s average defense. Chudier Bile and Blair led all scorers with 17 points each, and five Georgetown players scored in double digits. Blair did have a costly nine turnovers, which will need to be cleaned up if the Hoyas are to compete with higher-caliber Big East teams. Don Carey also had a solid game off the bench with 10 points.
After the game, Blair spoke about his turnovers, saying “I really take ownership… I have to clean that up. I’m going to go in tomorrow and watch some film. That’s not going to happen anymore.”
Nonetheless, this was a needed win for the Hoyas. They now sit at 6-10 overall and 4-7 in the Big East. Georgetown is scheduled to play Seton Hall on February 20th, and Ewing said they’d be open to scheduling a make-up game in the meantime. Until then, Hoya Saxa!
