Georgetown and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

The game was over before it started. Six minutes in and Providence had a 14-0 lead. By halftime the Hoyas’ deficit had increased to 31. Despite Georgetown’s best efforts, the halftime hole was too deep to climb out of, as the Friars wrapped up a 76-60 victory.

With Mac McClung ruled out with an eye injury, Hoya fans expected an uphill battle. No one could have expected it to be this bad. I’ll spare the ugly play-by-play details of the first half for everyone’s sake. All you need to know about the first half is the Providence made 10 three-pointers; Georgetown made seven total field goals. That’s not good. #Analysis

So the Hoyas couldn’t shoot. They couldn’t play defense. Oh, and they couldn’t take care of the ball either. Georgetown turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, which Providence turned into 19 points on the other end.

While the first half was all bad, the Hoyas began to show signs of life after halftime. Thanks to a hot shooting streak, Georgetown rattled off an 11-0 run to pull within 20 less than four minutes into the second period. The Hoyas cut the Friars’ lead to 16 points with 10:26 to play, but Providence eventually steadied the ship, and cruised to the finish.

While Georgetown was pretty much bad across the board, Terrell Allen’s play was especially disheartening. I’ll be the first to say Allen was a key component in the Hoyas’ strong finish to non-conference play. That’s what makes Tuesday’s performance all the more disappointing. Allen was three of 15 from the floor while also turning the ball over three times. Not the performance the Hoyas from their veteran point guard with McClung sidelined. It was expected that Georgetown’s lack of depth would catch up to them at some point. It appears as though Mac McClung’s absence was the final straw. With the Hoyas on the road once again to face Seton Hall on Friday, they will need to put the bad memories of Tuesday’s loss behind them. McClung’s future status remains uncertain, but this loss makes it clear that Georgetown will need him to get healthy, and fast. Starting conference play with a loss is never good. Here’s to hoping Ewing can get things straightened out, or else this season could go downhill real quick.
