As we know, Thompson’s Towel’s contributors are the foremost experts on Georgetown Basketball, so when they make their hot takes, you listen. Last year, the boys did not do so hot, going an exceptional one for six, with the only correct take being Patrick Ewing staying on the hot seat at the season’s end. Funny how that worked out. Now the hot takes are back. Hopefully we have better luck this year, but lets’s see what they came up with:
Supreme Cook makes an All Big East team
This is based off of nothing other than my own infatuation with Cook’s game. Will this happen? Probably not, but he will get minutes and I do believe he is a top 6 center in the conference.
— Armen Haratunian
Jayden Epps is named first-team All Big East
If you’re reading this article you probably saw the results of the not-so-secret scrimmage against Wake Forest earlier this month, in which John Fanta credited Epps with scoring 46 (!) points in a 81-77 win. Epps, other than Ish Massoud, is essentially the only proven high-major caliber player on this roster, and I expect Cooley to lean on the sophomore point guard heavily this season both as a facilitator and an initiator. Think James Akinjo on steroids.
— John Kurkjian
Providence and Hoya Lover Kim English sweep Georgetown
Two takes that are polar opposite of each other, yes, but I have a hard time looking beyond this Providence roster. They are better than Georgetown in essentially every area on the court, and knowing Georgetown, the Hoyas will either be blown off the court or find excruciating, heart-twisting ways to lose both games. Or maybe one of each! All I know is I’m going to have to log off twitter on those days. It’s going to be rough.
— John Kurkjian
Editor’s Note: Thank you, John, but this is not a hot take.
Hoyas start 11-1, but miss the tournament
–Matt Strong
Editor’s Note: Matt didn’t give us any kind of explanation for his take. Maybe the less he says the better…
Rowan Brumbaugh wins Big East POTY
— Brin Lewis
Editor’s Note: Brin also didn’t give an explanation. Why does this happen with the craziest takes?
Jayden Epps will be a star
I have to share how confident I am that Epps will be a star for the Hoyas this year. The 46 point game is certainly part of the reason I feel that way but his production and improvement during his freshman year on a team that struggled with identity and chemistry with a somewhat dysfunctional locker room presence(see Brad Underwood postgame press conferences). I expect him to take a big step forward under Cooley’s lead and will be the reason the Hoyas succeed this year.
After lacking any notable upsets, I expect Cooley to pull off a few, considering there will be plentiful opportunities with a stacked Big East. I’ll go with 2 wins against one of the big 3 teams(UConn, Marquette, and Creighton). A little wishful but as a junior I am hungry for something to be happy about.
— Cam Boyd
Georgetown makes the NIT and wins at least two games
In an era where some high-major programs see the NIT as beneath them, Coach Cooley will not. With the right mindset, the Hoyas have the talent to make at least a small run in the NIT.
— Andrew Parry
The Big East gets not one, but two teams into the Final Four this season
It’s tough to have too hot of a take regarding Georgetown, as this is surely to be a season filled with not only hope, but rebuilding and tough games as well. For this, I want to focus on the Big East as a whole, because this conference is truly elite this season, and it’s incredibly exciting. Put a gun to my head and I’d say Marquette and Creighton end up in the Final Four, as Marquette looks to build on a disappointing early exit last tournament with star Tyler Kolek returning, and Creighton, although not very deep, has as loaded a starting five as anyone this season. However, the contenders don’t stop there. I wouldn’t be surprised to see UConn make a return to the Final Four, or Villanova to crash the party either, with the amount of talent on both of those rosters.
While it’s unlikely that we see the Hoyas make a deep run come March, they’ll have plenty of chances to play spoiler in conference play with the plethora of contenders the Big East will have.
