Akinjo and LeBlanc Out For Rest of Season; Both Likely to Transfer

This story is developing. Check out our follow-up article here.

Wait, what’s happening?

The report offers little additional information, but it is clear that something has gone seriously wrong. LeBlanc had previously been suspended for the first game of the season due to unknown reasons, and it’s unclear if this is related to that.

To make matters worse, it appears unlikely that either Akinjo or Leblanc will don the blue and gray ever again. Per Jeff Goodman, both have entered their names in the NCAA’s transfer portal. While being in the transfer portal does not require individuals to transfer, it seems unlikely that either Akinjo or LeBlanc will ever again see the floor for Patrick Ewing.

The reason for the departures has been undisclosed by Georgetown Athletics.

Where does this leave Georgetown? Certainly far worse than before. Akinjo and LeBlanc, both former members of the All Big East Freshman Team, were supposed to be key players in the revival of the program. Instead, they leave Georgetown as a team without an identity, struggling to stay afloat.

The full announcement from Georgetown:

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University men’s basketball players James Akinjo and Josh LeBlanc will not be playing for the men’s basketball team effective immediately and will not be members of the team for the remainder of the season, Head Coach Patrick Ewing announced today.

Akinjo appeared in seven games this season, averaging 13.4 points per game and tallied 31 assists.

LeBlanc appeared in six games this season, averaging 7.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

UPDATE #1

Casual Hoya first reported that a Preliminary Injunction Order had been issued on November 20th against Josh LeBlanc and Galen Alexander. However, as reported by Thompson’s Towel, a current Georgetown student filed a complaint against these same two on November 5th. The plaintiff states that she “believe[s] Joshua LeBlanc committed [a burglary] against me on September 16, 2019. Joshua threatened bodily harm against myself and my roommate…”

UPDATE #2

Per The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie, James Akinjo’s departure looks to be unrelated to the court issues involving LeBlanc and other Georgetown players.

UPDATE #3

Georgetown Athletics issues their third statement on this matter in the past 24 hours.
